Schrodinger and Quantum theory
1. Quantum Theory
Atoms and molecules exist as discrete states, Also, when the state of an atom or molecule changes, it absorbs or emits energy.
When an atom or molecule absorbs or emits light as it transitions between different energy states, the wavelength of light is expressed in terms of two different energy states, as shown below.
--> E (high) - E (low) = h * c / λ
Where, h : Plank's constant h : 6.63 * 10^-34 *j*s
c : speed of electromagnetic radiation
c = 3 * 10^8 m*s-1 ( c= λ *v)
λ : wavelength (nanometers(10^-9m) or angstrom(10^-10m))
λ : wavelength (nanometers(10^-9m) or angstrom(10^-10m))
v : frequency, [Hs or sec^-1]
The allowed energy state of an atom or molecule is expressed in quantum numbers.
2. Wave mechanics
The branch of quantum mechanics known as wave mechanics is used to describe the state of motion of matter particles such as electrons.
It served as the foundation for developing quantum models of atoms.
