The Summary Group 3A elements : Boron, Aluminum, Gallium, Indium, Thallium

Rucete ✏ Chemistry In a Nutshell

Chemical Properties and Periodicity

Group 3A

1 Boron (B)

 1. Metalloid
 2. Not generate binary ionic compounds
 3. Does not form oxides and does not react with water

2 In Group 3A, except Boron, the rest are metals.

3 Aluminum (Al)

 1. Reaction to Oxygen : 4Al(s) + 3O2(g) → 2Al2O3(s)
 2. Amphoterism atom : exhibits both acidic and basic properties.
  --> base characteristic : Al2O3(s) + 6HCl(aq) → 2AlCl + 3H2O(l)
  --> acid characteristic : Al2O3(s) + 2NaOH(aq) + 3H2O(l) → 2NaAl(OH)4(aq)
  --> other amphoterism atom : Be, Zn, Bi

4 Gallium (Ga), Indium(In), Thallium(Tl)

 1. Tendency to be ion that +1 or +3
 2. +1 ion is more stable than +3 ion

5 Group 3A metals generate molecular(covalent) compounds
