The Electron Configuration of Atoms : Lewis Dot diagrams, Incomplete Octets, Expanded Octets

Rucete ✏ Chemistry In a Nutshell

Lewis Dot diagrams

1 Mark the valence electron as a dot on the symbol of the atom.

2 The number of dots is equal to group number. (Except for helium[He])

Incomplete Octets

 1 Octets rule
An atom becomes very stable when it has eight electrons.

 2 Incomplete Octets
  1. Atoms are stable without eight valence electrons.
  2. Ex) Beryllium hydride (BeH2), Boron trifluoride (BF3)

Expanded Octets

1 In molecules that have d subshells available, the central atom can have more than eight valence electrons.

2 Central atoms are the third period like a phosphorus[P] and sulfur[S]

3 Example : PCl5, SF4, SH6
