Changing the Equilibrium Position

Rucete ✏ Chemistry In a Nutshell

Once the system is equilibrium, it stops changing. And if it is disrupted in any way does the mechanism shift its balance. The pattern of how balance systems react to change was first put forward by a French scientist named Le Chatelier.

The equilibrium system reacts to change in such a way as to minimize the impact of that change.

Factor - Response of equilibrium systems to change

Concentration - Increase reactants l Towards products
Concentration - Increase products l Towards reactants

Pressure - Increase pressure l Towards the smaller amount of gaseous molecules
Pressure - Decrease pressure l Towards the larger amount of gaseous molecules

Temperature - Increase temperature l Towards endothermic, ∆H +ve
Temperature - Decrease temperature l Towards exothermic, ∆H -ve

The catalyst has no impact on the balance equilibrium. It provides an alternate mechanism for lower activation energy for both forward and reverse reactions, which ensures that balance is achieved more rapidly but the concentrations of all species present at equilibrium remain unchanged.

The Kc value is only influenced by a change in temperature.
