Equation of a line
Mathematics In a Nutshell
Expression of equation of a line
--> y = mx + c or ax + by + c = 0
Gradient Intercept method
Equation of a line as y = mx + c
Example 1
What is the gradient and y-intercept for the line y = 4x - 2.
Answer
y = 4x - 2
--> gradient = 4 , y-intercept = -2
Example 2
What is the gradient and y-intercept for the line 3y - 3x + 2 = 0.
Answer
3y - 3x + 2 = 0
-->
3y = 3x -2
y = 3x/3 - 2/3 (divide by 3)
y = x - 2/3
Gradient = 1
y-intercept = -2/3
Example 3
Answer
Gradient = -2 / 4 = -1 / 2
y-intercept = 2
Equation of a line y = -1/2x + 2
