Isotopes Definition & Explanation

Rucete ✏ Chemistry In a Nutshell

Isotopes are called atoms with the same number of protons but different neutron numbers.

A mass spectrometer can be used to find the number of isotopes in a sample. By eliminating one or more electrons, the mass of the atoms, they convert the atoms to positive ions.
In a magnetic field, positive ions will then be measured by their deflection.

Relative Atomic Mass
In the periodic table, atomic masses are determined using the average mass of all the isotopes in a sample of the compound and then compared with the mass of 1/12 of a C (mass of 12) atom.

How to calculate?

Two principal isotopes, chlorine-35 and chlorine-37, are composed of natural chlorine.

The relative atomic mass of chlorine in this sample can be calculated from this data.
