When an ankle is sprained | ankle pain and sprain, symptoms and treatment

Rucete Knowledge In [11]

It refers to an ankle sprain in which the ankle joint is twisted inward or outward, rupturing or damaging the ankle ligaments. It is possible to demonstrate large and generous ankle pain, difficulty walking, and symptoms such as edema and bruise. If the symptoms are severe, an ankle ligament rupture may occur, necessitating an examination to diagnose.

What is the main cause of ruptured ankle ligaments?

In the majority of cases, it occurs when the ankle joint is bent beyond its normal range immediately upon contact with the floor. The inner and outer ligaments stabilized the ankle joint. Among them, the anterior talofibular ligament is the most susceptible to damage, while the joint capsule is easily ruptured or damaged by the inner ligament.

Symptoms of ankle sprain

It is classified into three stages based on the severity of the ankle ligament rupture.

Grade 1 sprain ankle

Grade 1 sprain ankle is mild damage to the ligament without rupture, which can lead to edema and an oppressive pain.

Grade 2 sprain ankle

Grade 2 ankle sprain refers to damage caused by a ruptured ankle ligament and joint instability.

Grade 3 sprain ankle

Grade 3 sprain ankle is characterized by complete ligament rupture and is accompanied by severe edema, bleeding, and excruciating pain.
Ankle joint instability and severe ligament damage may render the ankle joint incapable of bearing weight and may have a detrimental effect on other joints such as the knees, hip joints, and spine, so extreme caution.

A severe ankle sprain could be accompanied by a sense of bone sound and tissue swelling. Furthermore, it makes walking difficult and results in complete dislocation of the ankle joint.

Treatment of sprain ankle

The treatment period varies according to the degree of damage sustained when an ankle is sprained, but generally requires a 4-6 week recovery period.

Even if the rupture is severe, rehabilitation treatment is expected to improve without surgery, depending on the patient's occupation and environmental factors. On the other hand, in occupations with a high level of patient activity, surgical treatment is used to prevent rupture.

To keep ligament damage from worsening, a cast will be applied. Reduces the stress on the ankle by locking it in place and reducing the applied weight.

Injection therapy and physical therapy are used in the hospital to help patients regain function and strengthen their muscles.

When an ankle is sprained, if the symptoms are not severe, ankle pain may be relieved naturally. However, weakened ligaments do not naturally heal and are susceptible to recurrence and chronicity. If your ankle stumbles unexpectedly or has a history of bending, you almost certainly have ankle instability.

As a result, it is critical to strengthen the muscles surrounding the ankle and increase flexibility following treatment for ankle pain or natural recovery.

It is necessary to relieve muscle tension prior to exercising and to exercise with caution when walking or running on uneven surfaces.
