Lipids ✏ Biology In a Nutshell

Lipids In a nutshell

It is hydrocarbon-based molecules that are hydrophobic.

1 Triglycerides

1 These are fats and oils

2 Glycerol + 3 fatty acid(hydrocarbon with a carboxyl group(-COOH))

3 Saturated fatty acid : there was a single bond between carbon atoms

4 Monounsaturated fatty acid : there is one double bond.

5 Polyunsaturated fatty acid : there are two or more double bonds

2 Phospholipid

1 In Triglycerides, one of the fatty acid chains was replaced by a phosphate group(-PO₃²⁻).

2 It consists of a phosphate group and one or two fatty acids and two alcohols.

3 Phospholipid's tail is nonpolar and its head is hydrophilic.

4 It is a double structure in which the head is outward and the tail is inward.

3 Steroids

1 Cholesterol : it is a component of the cell membrane

2 Hormones : such as testosterone and estrogen
